Colombo, June 4 (Daily Mirror) - In line with the government-declared National Tax Week aimed at raising public awareness on taxation, the Sri Lanka Customs Department has officially launched a new 'Vehicle Verification Portal' to enable the public to access details of vehicles imported into the country.
Additional Director General of Customs Seevali Arukgoda urged the public to make use of the portal to verify the legal authenticity of vehicles before making purchases.
To access the portal, users are required to enter their phone number, NIC or passport number, and the vehicle chassis number. Upon submission, an SMS will be sent to the provided phone number confirming the legal status of the vehicle, Arukgoda explained.
However, vehicles imported prior to 2005 cannot be verified through this system, he said.
Arukgoda said that the initiative was introduced to allow anyone to conveniently check a vehicle’s import status using their mobile device from the comfort of their homes.
“This platform will help potential buyers confirm whether a vehicle has been legally imported, brought down in parts and assembled locally, or whether it carries fraudulent number plates. It is a valuable tool for ensuring the legality and authenticity of a vehicle purchase,” he added.
The Vehicle Verification Portal is now accessible to the public as part of broader efforts to promote transparency and accountability in vehicle imports and transactions.
