Colombo, Oct. 10 (Daily Mirror) - Police said today that no evidence was produced by former MP and National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa to substantiate the statements he made during a media conference on October 2.
Wimal Weerawansa appeared before the Tangalle Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau on Thursday (09) to provide a statement regarding his earlier remarks about a drug seizure in Tangalle on September 22, 2025 involving a suspect known as Beliatta Sana.
Police said that in his statement to the Police, Weerawansa had told that he had never met or recognized a person called Weerasinghe Sanath (alias Beliatte Sana/Puwakdandawe Sana) as an active member of the JVP.
Police said he further explained that his claim about drugs being brought in and raids being carried out “with state sponsorship” was a general comment about the overall situation in the country and not directed at this particular case.
The former MP also told the police that his remarks linking the suspect to ownership of the boat carrying drugs were based on media reports available at that time.
Police said the former MP denied allegations that the President had visited or dined at the suspect’s house during the last local government election period, stating that the President had only eaten at a hotel in the area.
Weerawansa also mentioned that he believed the delay in arresting the suspect, Beliatte Sana, may have occurred due to state influence or sponsorship, according to the police.
Accordingly, police said that the former MP failed to provide any evidence to substantiate the statements he made during a media conference on October 2.
They said that any false or misleading information uncovered during the ongoing investigation will be reported to court and legal action will be taken.
