Police recover cache of weapons used in deadly Negombo Prison riot

Colombo, July 11 (Daily Mirror) - Police have recovered a cache of sharp weapons and makeshift clubs during ongoing investigations into the recent riot at the Negombo Prison, where inmates brutally attacked prison officers.

According to the police, the sweep of the prison complex led to the discovery of hundreds of clubs, numerous sharp weapons, and a large stash of iron rods hidden inside the premises.

Investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) revealed that during the height of the unrest, inmates broke into the prison kitchen to arm themselves. In addition to seizing sharp culinary tools, the rioters reportedly carried out coconuts from the kitchen to pelt and assault the prison officers.

The violent tragedy at the Negombo Prison claimed the lives of eight prison officials and 21 inmates. Following the incident, the CID launched a  probe into the clashes, leading to the latest recovery of weapons used during the fatal unrest.
