Police probe underway to arrest Hambantota Mayor over assault in Bambalapitiya

The Bambalapitiya Police have launched an investigation against  Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando in connection with an alleged assault, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

A private sector security officer had lodged a complaint with the Bambalapitiya Police stating that Eraj Fernando had stormed into a property at Kothalawala avenue in Bambalapitiya on Tuesday without giving any reason and had verbally abused and assaulted  him and the other security officer who was with him.

A security guard who was allegedly assaulted by the mayor has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The spokesperson said several statements have been recorded in connection with the incident.

Investigations are being carried out based on those statements and steps will be taken to arrest the mayor, police said.

It was also reported that a special police team has gone in search of Eraj Fernando to arrest him.(DSB)
