While commemorating International Victims Day today, Transport State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said the number of road accidents must be reduced to commemorate the day next year.
An event was held at the Makumbura Multimodal Centre (MMC), Kottawa, to commemorate International Victims Day and Rs. 17.4 million in compensation was paid for the family members and dependents of seven victims of accidents caused by unidentified vehicles.
The minister claimed that 8 to 10 people are killed daily in road accidents and that 45,000 road accidents occur in a year.
This situation has become part of the social and economic situation in the country. Therefore, new rules had been passed through the parliament such as introducing the driving licence including the Driver Improvement Points which was known as Drivers’ Demerit Points System.
