Colombo, January 26 (Daily Mirror) - The Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC) today claimed that a mediation board in Oddusuddan in Mullaitivu District has issued a verdict to hang a dog which had bit a goat, in order to resolve a conflict between two groups of people.
AWC Executive Committee Member, Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara, told the Daily Mirror that a letter had been sent to Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, informing him of the incident.
According to the letter, the incident was reported Saturday (25). The Mediation Board in Oddusuddan had reportedly issued the order to hang the dog as a resolution to the conflict between the two groups.
As per the details, a dog belonging to one family had bitten a goat owned by another family, leading to a dispute between the two families.
The case was brought before the Mediation Board, where three mediators allegedly made the decision to hang the dog and instructed the family that owned the dog to provide photographic evidence of the act.
Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara claimed that the affected family acted on this order, committing the inhumane act of hanging the dog.
"Such an order and subsequent action are profoundly disturbing, and we have never encountered such a cruel directive before," he said.
The incident has widely circulated on social media.
The AWC believes that issuing such an order is a violation of both moral and legal principles. It directly contradicts the spirit and provisions of the laws of this country.
The AWC urged the minister to intervene immediately to ensure justice is served and to prevent such heinous acts from recurring.
