Colombo, August 05 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet approved a proposal to reduce the annual group insurance coverage for Members of Parliament (MPs) from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 250,000, with the new policy taking effect from October 9, 2025.

The proposal was submitted by Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala in line with an initiative of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to scale back privileges granted to MPs.

The group insurance scheme, initially introduced in May 2023, was designed to provide each MP with a maximum annual coverage of Rs. 1 million. Under this policy, MPs were entitled to claim medical or life insurance benefits up to the specified amount. Since its inception, payments and reimbursements have been made in accordance with this coverage.

With the Cabinet decision, the revised coverage amount of Rs. 250,000 will apply for the new insurance year beginning in October.
