Feb.08 (Mirror Sports) - Kamindu Mendis delivered instant impact as Sri Lanka opened their T20 World Cup campaign with a 20-run victory over Ireland at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.
Drafted into the squad at the last moment, Kamindu turned the match with a blistering 44 off just 19 balls, lifting Sri Lanka from a sluggish position to a competitive 163.
The left-hander arrived with the score at 86 for four and broke a long boundary drought before launching a late assault, including a 21-run over that swung momentum decisively Sri Lanka’s way. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with an unbeaten half-century.
Sri Lanka’s spinners then took control of the chase. Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga and Dunith Wellalage shared seven wickets as Ireland slipped from 105 for two to 143 all out in 19.5 overs.
Hasaranga finished with three wickets to reach 40 World Cup scalps, despite a brief fitness scare during his spell, while Matheesha Pathirana sealed the win with two wickets in the final over.
Ireland showed promise through a solid stand between Lorcan Tucker and Harry Tector, but struggled against spin as Sri Lanka held their nerve at the death.
Co-hosts Sri Lanka banked early momentum in the 20-team tournament, underlining their depth and experience on familiar conditions.
