Colombo, July 24 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Navy has seized approximately 3,135 kilograms of smuggled Kendu leaves along with three dinghies during a search operation conducted off Karukapane Beach in Chilaw today (24).
The operation was carried out by SLNS Thambapanni, attached to the Northwestern Naval Command, based on information received regarding a suspicious movement in the area.
During the search, naval personnel inspected three suspicious dinghies found off the Karukapane coastal area and discovered the Kendu leaves packed in 80 sacks.
The Navy suspects that the consignment had been smuggled into the country and that those involved had abandoned the dinghies due to increased surveillance by naval personnel in the area.
The seized Kendu leaves and the three dinghies were handed over to the Chilaw Excise Department Office for further legal action.
