Japan reaffirms support for modernising Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector

May 14 (Daily Mirror) - The Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, His Excellency ISOMATA Akio, has reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting the modernisation of Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector through the introduction of advanced technology and innovation-driven development initiatives.

The assurance was given during a special meeting held at the Ambassador’s official residence, following an invitation extended to Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar.

During the discussions, both sides held cordial exchanges on strengthening bilateral cooperation between Sri Lanka and Japan, with particular focus on fisheries and marine resource development. A dinner was also hosted by the Japanese Ambassador in honour of the Minister.

Key areas of discussion included ongoing financial assistance programmes provided by the Government of Japan to Sri Lanka, as well as potential avenues to further expand cooperation in the fisheries sector.

Minister Chandrasekar briefed the Ambassador on the Ministry’s future development plans, highlighting strategies aimed at ensuring the sustainable and efficient utilisation of Sri Lanka’s marine resources. The talks also explored the introduction of Japan’s advanced fisheries technologies and modern systems to improve productivity and support sectoral modernisation.

Responding, Ambassador ISOMATA Akio reaffirmed that the Government of Japan remains fully prepared to support Sri Lanka’s efforts to modernise its fisheries industry and collaborate on implementing innovation-based projects.

The meeting also underscored the longstanding friendship and strong bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Japan.

Also present at the occasion were Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries Dr. B.K. Koliita Kamal Jinadasa, Minister’s Private Secretary Sritharan Poologarajah, and Minister’s Coordinating Secretary Kesan Madushanka.
