The Irrigation Department says that spill gates of 12 major reservoirs and six medium-sized reservoirs have been opened due to the prevailing rainy weather conditions across the country.

According to the Department, all spill gates of several key reservoirs have been activated to manage rising water levels and ensure safety of downstream areas.

Among the reservoirs where spill gates have been opened are:

  • Rajanganaya Reservoir – 10 spill gates
  • Lunugamvehera Reservoir – 10 spill gates
  • Weheragala Reservoir – 10 spill gates
  • Sorabora Wewa – 10 spill gates
  • Deduru Oya Reservoir – 10 spill gates
  • Alikotaara Reservoir – 10 spill gates

The Department further said that spill gates at additional reservoirs are also being operated as necessary, in line with water level increases caused by continuous rainfall.

Authorities continue to monitor reservoir levels closely and urge the public living in low-lying and downstream areas to remain vigilant due to possible changes in water release volumes.
