March 23 (Daily Mirror) - Iranian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Dr. Alireza Delkhosh reaffirmed Iran's commitment to supporting Sri Lanka as a "friend country," stating that Tehran is ready to provide essential supplies, including oil, should the need arise.
Speaking at a special media conference at the Iranian Embassy in Colombo, the Ambassador addressed the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its potential impact on regional partners.
Ambassador Delkhosh said that despite the declaration of the Strait of Hormuz as a war zone due to ongoing hostilities, the vital maritime passage remains open to friendly nations like Sri Lanka.
He assured that Iran is prepared to step in if Sri Lanka faces energy or commodity shortages, noting that the "nation of Sri Lanka is very esteemed and respected" by Iran.
The briefing also touched upon the tragic sinking of the Iranian vessel 'IRIS Dena' near Sri Lankan waters, which the Ambassador alleged was targeted by a U.S. submarine.
He expressed gratitude for the hospitality and humanitarian assistance provided by the Sri Lankan government to the surviving crew and cadets.
According to the Ambassador, the vessel was in the region for a friendly visit following multinational naval exercises in India and was not prepared for combat at the time of the attack.
