Colombo, May 19 (Daily Mirror) - A coordinated capacity-building initiative aimed at strengthening national action against forced labour got underway yesterday (18) with the launch of a three-day workshop at the National Plantation Management Institute in Athurugiriya.
The programme brings together officials from the Labour Department, the Police Department, and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Overseas Employment and Tourism, in a joint effort to enhance inter-agency coordination and enforcement mechanisms across the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces.
Inaugurating the workshop, Labour Ministry Secretary S.M. Piyatissa underscored the importance of strengthening institutional collaboration in addressing forced labour-related challenges.
International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Representative Joni Simpson, who attended the opening session, commended the ongoing efforts of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Labour and the Department of Labour in advancing measures to eliminate forced labour.
