Illegal TV transmission centre raided in Mount Lavinia; foreign national arrested

Colombo, May 20 (Daily Mirror) - A television transmission centre operated using illegal communication equipment was raided by officers of the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau, leading to the arrest of a foreign national, police said.

The raid was carried out yesterday (19) at a building located on Attidiya Road within the Mount Lavinia Police Division, following information received regarding the operation of an illegal transmission centre. Police had obtained a search warrant from the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court prior to conducting the operation.

The raid was jointly conducted by officers of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau.

Police said a 55-year-old Maldivian national residing in the Kalubowila area was arrested for allegedly operating the illegal television transmission centre using communication equipment that had been unlawfully imported into the country.

A stock of communication equipment valued at approximately Rs. 10 million was seized during the raid.

The suspect and the seized equipment were handed over to the Mount Lavinia Police Station, while further investigations are continuing.
