Colombo, May 20 (Daily Mirror) - Public health authorities have issued a nationwide advisory urging organizers of Dansalas for the 2026 Vesak festival to register their events with the relevant Medical Officer of Health (MOH) offices in their areas, warning that unapproved or unsanitary food stalls will not be permitted to operate.
Officials said that Public Health Inspectors will actively monitor and provide guidance to ensure all Dansalas meet required hygiene and safety standards, with inspections to be carried out during the festival period.
They further highlighted that organizers must seek proper technical advice in advance to prevent food contamination and health risks, noting that strict action will be taken against Dansalas operating in unhygienic conditions.
Key requirements include the use of clean drinking water, proper storage to avoid contamination, and systematic disposal of wastewater to prevent environmental pollution. Waste generated at Dansalas must be collected in covered bins or bags, while sites must be thoroughly cleaned after operations conclude.
Authorities also warned that individuals engaged in food preparation must maintain high personal hygiene standards, adding that those suffering from infectious or skin diseases will not be allowed to participate in food handling.
The use of alcohol, smoking, and chewing betel within Dansala premises has been strictly prohibited.
For rice and gram Dansalas, officials have mandated adequate cooking space away from toilets and drainage areas, proper sanitation of utensils, and continuous covering of food to protect it from flies. Food servers must use gloves, masks, and head coverings, while handwashing facilities with soap must be readily available.
Separate guidelines for beverages and ice cream stalls require proper refrigeration, sanitized serving cups, and adequate waste disposal systems.
Health officials say the measures are aimed at ensuring that Vesak Dansalas remain safe, hygienic, and beneficial to the public during the 2026 celebrations.
