Colombo, July 1 (Daily Mirror) - Cabinet approval was granted today to implement the government’s online traffic fine payment programme islandwide, expanding on the pilot project currently in operation, Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake said.
Speaking to the media following an awareness programme near the Kottawa Expressway entrance, on the importance of wearing seat belts for vehicles using the expressway, the Minister said steps have been taken to simplify the process of paying traffic fines.
“Today, Cabinet approval was granted for traffic fines to be paid online. At present, this facility is only available from Kurunegala to Anuradhapura via mobile devices. But we are now providing phones to police officers islandwide,” he said.
He further added that from this year, motorists will be able to pay traffic fines from anywhere in the country, making the process faster and more convenient for the public.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernise traffic management and improve road safety enforcement through digital services.
