Colombo, March 31 (Daily Mirror) - Food prices at eateries across the country will be increased with effect from midnight today (March 31), following a decision by the All-Island Canteen and Restaurant Owners' Association, citing rising operational costs.
Association President Harshana Rukshan said the price of popular items such as fried rice and kottu has been increased by Rs. 30, while short eats have gone up by Rs. 10. The price of a cup of plain tea and milk tea has also been raised by Rs. 5.
He attributed the price revision primarily to the electricity tariff hike effective from April 1, which is expected to significantly increase operating expenses for restaurants.
Rukshan said that most restaurants exceed 180 electricity units per month, placing them in higher billing categories and resulting in steep utility costs.
He added that the price increase was necessary to ensure the sustainability of the industry, as many operators are struggling to cope with rising electricity bills.
