Colombo, May 19 (Daily Mirror) - The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board has announced that farmers will receive compensation of up to Rs. 100,000 per hectare for crop damage caused by recent heavy rains during the ongoing Yala season.
Issuing a statement, the Board said the compensation scheme will cover paddy, maize, potato, soya, chilli and onion cultivations affected by adverse weather conditions.
Farmers have been instructed to report any crop damage to the relevant Agrarian Service Centres within 14 days of the incident.
The Agriculture Ministry said compensation will be provided following assessments to determine the extent of damage in affected areas.
According to the announcement, the scheme will operate as a free insurance programme, with no premium charged from farmers.
