Examination of evidence concludes in inquiry against Deshabandu

Colombo, July 2 (Daily Mirror) - The examination of evidence before the Committee of Inquiry appointed to investigate into allegations of gross abuse of power by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon concluded yesterday (July 1).

The Committee, chaired by Supreme Court Judge P.P. Surasena and comprising Justice W.M.N.P. Iddawala and E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake, Chairman of the National Police Commission, reconvened to record testimonies from two additional witnesses presented by the prosecution. 

These witnesses had previously been overseas on official duty and both parties had earlier agreed to obtain their evidence after June 26.

Representing the Attorney General’s Department at the inquiry were Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris PC, and Deputy Solicitor General Rajitha Perera, while Attorney-at-Law R.S. Weerawickrama appeared for the IGP.

Following the conclusion of the presentation of evidence, the Committee recommended that both the prosecution and the respondent submit their written submissions by 3:30 p.m. on July 8, 2025.
