Colombo, July 28 (Daily Mirror) - The government’s education reform is not just about introducing a new textbook, but about completely overhauling the current system to reduce pressure on the students, parents and teachers, Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.

She made these remarks during a panel discussion held on July 26 at the Ratnapura Town Hall, under the theme ‘For a Prosperous Nation Let’s Unite as Women’ organized by the Ratnapura District Women’s Collective of the National People’s Power (NPP).

Dr. Amarasuriya said the existing education system places overwhelming pressure on children due to its exam-centered approach, creating unnecessary stress for both students and parents. She explained that the new reforms aim to change this structure and reduce the social consequences of intense competition in education.

“For a long time, our political movement has spoken about the need for an education system that doesn’t weigh down students, parents or teachers. These reforms are meant to fix long-standing issues, not just change textbooks,” she said.

She also criticised past governments for failing to deliver meaningful change.

“Although they talked about reforms, they often used education to push their own political agendas. Budgets were cut, and the financial burden shifted to parents. Investments in teacher training and educational leadership were neglected,” she said.

The Prime Minister stressed that without proper resources such as trained professionals, infrastructure and funding, these previous efforts never led to real improvements.

She added that the current government is focused on meaningful social transformation through open public dialogue.

“We are not only changing policies—we are working to shift attitudes in society. Everyone has a role to play in spreading this conversation,” she added.
