Colombo, May 27 (Daily Mirror) - The Election Commission of Sri Lanka is firm on taking legal action against the candidates of the recently concluded Local Government polls if their campaign finance details were not submitted before midnight today, a senior official said yesterday.
The deadline to submit the campaign finance details of over 79,000 candidates that contested at the LG polls will expire at 12.00 midnight today (27) and the commission is left with no other solution but to resort to legal action against those have failed to submit them as per the provisions of the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act No.3 of 2023.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Chairman ECSL R. M. A. L. Rathnayake said only a little more than 10,000 candidates had submitted their details by last week to the respective Returning Officers in the district.
He said the commission will take measures to notify the police to file legal action against those who have failed to produce their details after the deadline.
Earlier, Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake issued a circular notifying all the candidates, their respective party secretaries and leaders of the independent groups could easily register with the election commission web portal https://cf.e;ections.gov.lk/ to upload the election expenses details.
