Digital learning systems should be introduced in schools while making sure that all schools receive fair access to teachers, equipment and other resources, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.

She said this during a meeting held with the Task Force appointed by the Cabinet to lead the Digital Education Transformation project for students from Grade 6 to 13.

The discussion focused on starting the digital shift in education, solving related problems and setting the right rules and plans.

The Prime Minister pointed out that there is currently a shortage of more than 42,000 teachers in both national and provincial schools, and that this issue needs to be fixed urgently.

As a short-term solution, she said digital learning systems should be introduced within the next six months. This will help reduce the learning gap by making better use of the resources the schools already have.

One of the main goals of the Task Force is to make sure that all schools—especially those that support students with disabilities—get equal access to learning tools and facilities. The Prime Minister added that a strong team from different sectors is needed to achieve this goal.
