Deluge above 100 mm in many provinces: Met Dept.

Showers or c in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, Southern and Northern provinces with heavy showers above 100 mm is expected, the Meteorology Department said today.

Showers more than 75 mm are expected in some areas, according to the forecast.

The wind could gather speeds up to 50 km/h over the island and henceforth, the general public are advised to take adequate precautions to safeguard themselves from thunderstorms, gale and lightning, the Department said.

Meanwhile, a death was reported in the Ratnapura area due to heavy rains and gusty winds that swept through that area, as per the situation report issued by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) yesterday.

Around 322 people from 106 families, have been affected so far in the Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces due to this extreme weather conditions.

The DMC report further states that 14 small and medium enterprise businesses suffered damages, and 88 incidents of partial damage to house were also reported in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, with one house was reported to have completely destroyed by the inclement weather in Imbulpe in Ratnapura district.
