Owing to the rapid increase in the deer population in the Homagama and suburbs, the Wild Life department is contemplating to relocate these animals to a forest conservation zone or in a sanctuary.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera took this decision following complaints from various people in the Homagama area, since these deer are causing damage to their crops.

The Minister also suggested releasing these animals to a forest conservation zone or a sanctuary since it was recently reported that rabies is spreading among the herd of deer roaming freely around Homagama.

Accordingly, the Ministry officials were instructed that these deer herd should not be released to the conservation zones or sanctuaries without a complete rabies test. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
