Canadian woman arrested at BIA with Rs. 360 Mn ’hashish’

A foreign woman was arrested at Katunayake Airport with a consignment of "hashish" worth approximately Rs. 360 million.

The 36-year-old Canadian woman was arrested by officers from the Customs Narcotics Control Division upon her arrival from Toronto, Canada, last night.

Her arrest followed an international intelligence tip-off received by Sri Lanka Customs. The suspect is reportedly a drug addict.

Customs officers discovered 36.5 kilograms of "hashish" concealed in several bed sheets inside two suitcases she brought with her.

Authorities suspect the drugs were intended for re-export to another country. 

The Canadian woman and the drugs will be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation.
