Businessman arrested over video showing woman being stripped in Borella

Colombo, Jan. 19 (Daily Mirror) - Three individuals, including a well-known businessman, were arrested after a video showing a woman being stripped in Borella circulated on social media.

Police said the Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women launched an investigation following the circulation of the video in recent days. 

The probe was conducted under the instructions of the DIG in charge of the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women.

The main suspect, a 43-year-old businessman from Fairfield Gardens, Borella, was arrested on Sunday while hiding in a prominent hotel in Hikkaduwa.

Two other individuals, aged 44 and 55, who are residents of the Eheliyagoda area, were also arrested for aiding the suspect and concealing evidence from the police.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had stripped the woman, who was employed as a maid, in front of a group of people at his home, recorded the act and circulated the video on social media via a WhatsApp group.

A report has been filed with the Aluthgama Magistrate’s Court, and a travel ban has been imposed on the main suspect. 

Police said the investigation is ongoing and said that the suspect had been staying at several well-known hotels following the incident in an attempt to evade arrest.

The suspects were remanded till February 2 after produced in court.
