Colombo, May 09 (Daily Mirror) - The All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) has officially suspended the party membership of the Deputy Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, Ashardeen Moinudeen, with immediate effect. The decision follows his arrest by authorities over allegations of soliciting a significant bribe.
Moinudeen was elected to the Kurunegala Municipal Council representing the ACMC. During the formation of the local government administration, he extended his support to the National People’s Power (NPP) to establish power within the council, subsequently securing his appointment as Deputy Mayor.
The arrest was carried out on Friday (May 8) in the Battaramulla area by officers from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). The Deputy Mayor was reportedly caught while attempting to accept a bribe of Rs. 3 million.
According to investigations, the suspect had allegedly demanded the money from a businessman in exchange for awarding the tender for cleaning the Kurunegala main bus stand and maintaining its public toilets. In addition to the upfront payment of Rs. 3 million, he had reportedly requested a further monthly payment of Rs. 500,000 to ensure the continuation of the contract.
