Dambulla court fines traders for selling kiri samba above regulated price

Colombo, June 25 (Daily Mirror) - The Dambulla Magistrate’s Court has imposed fines on two business establishments for selling Kiri Samba rice above the government-approved Maximum Retail Price (MRP).

The court on June 24, 2026, fined the defendants Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 200,000 respectively in cases filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) following raids conducted by officers attached to its Matale District Office.

According to the CAA, the first case was filed against P.G.S. Traders, a wholesale trader operating at the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre. The establishment was found selling imported Kiri Samba rice at Rs. 261 per kilogram despite the gazetted maximum retail price being fixed at Rs. 255 per kilogram.

The second case was filed against Jipena Stores in Dambulla for selling locally produced Kiri Samba rice at Rs. 360 per kilogram, exceeding the regulated maximum retail price of Rs. 260 per kilogram.

The fines were imposed after the defendants pleaded guilty before the court.

The CAA urged the public to report traders and manufacturers who sell goods above the prescribed maximum retail prices by contacting its 1977 hotline during office hours.
