50mm rainfall forecast over next 36 hours: Meteorology Department

Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory forecasting intermittent showers in several parts of the country over the next 36 hours, with the possibility of heavy rainfall in certain areas.

According to the Department, showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara districts. Isolated heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some places within these areas.

Meanwhile, several spells of showers are expected in the North-western province and Matale district. A few showers may also occur in the Northern province, Anuradhapura, and Hambantota districts.

The Met Department further stated that showers or thundershowers may develop in the afternoon or night in parts of the Uva province, Ampara, and Batticaloa districts.

In addition, fairly strong winds, ranging between 30-40 kmph, can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, Southern, North-western provinces, as well as the Trincomalee district.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers to prevent potential damage and ensure safety.
