500MW Coal Power Plant to be constructed in Sampoor

The Cabinet gave approval to construct the proposed 500 MW capacity Coal Power Plant at Sampoor in Tricomalee with Indian assistance on a proposal made by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Due to the increased demand for electricity in the Eastern Province, it has been decided to establish a Coal Based Power Plant of 2x250MW capacity at Sampoor in the Trincomalee District at a total investment of around US$500 million.

The partners of this US$500 million joint venture are the CEB and the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. of India, Minister Rambukwella said. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)
