31 arrested in Nuwara Eliya during long weekend

Colombo, Oct. 19 (Daily Mirror) - Police in Nuwara Eliya have arrested 31 individuals, aged 18 to 35, from various parts of the island, on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs during the long weekend, police said.

Chief Inspector of Police P.S.C. Sanjeewa of the Nuwara Eliya Headquarters Police stated that several of those arrested were linked to a party organized through Facebook at the Fourth Vehicle Terminal in Gregory Lake on the 18th.

The suspects were found in possession of cannabis, hashish, kush, methamphetamine, cocaine, cannabis-infused tobacco, narcotics tablets, and duty-unpaid cigarettes.

The arrests were carried out through coordinated police roadblocks, with the assistance of the Nuwara Eliya Divisional Police Dog Unit covering all roads leading to Nuwara Eliya. The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court.

An official from the Nuwara Eliya Tourist Hotel Owners Association noted that the long weekend and Diwali festival season brought a large influx of local tourists to the area.
