The Railways Department yesterday received 20 railway compartments out of 160 passenger coaches funded under an Indian Line of Credit of USD 318 million, the Railways General Manager, Dhammika Jayasundara said.
He told the Daily Mirror that 40 out of 20 compartments were brought yesterday, and the ship had returned to bring the remaining compartments.
Earlier, 30 train compartments were brought on two occasions under the scheme. Accordingly, 10 train compartments were imported on March 10, 2021, and later another 20 compartments came under the Indian aid.
An agreement was signed in connection with this in September 2019.
These passenger coaches have been equipped with the latest technological features, including stainless steel shells with polyurethane exterior painting, anti-graffiti coating, and special anti-corrosive paint to guard against harsh coastal weather conditions. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
