As a solution to the practical issues that have arisen in providing education to school children through online methods, a total number of 2,096 resource centres were opened today, Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said.

While participating at an opening ceremony of one of the resource centres at the Dodangoda primary School in Matugama, the Minister said most of the students had to face many difficulties when continuing their studies with the use of online methods.

Therefore, the Ministry had decided to open 2,096 resource centres with the support of leading telecommunication institutes.

These resource centres were identified following lengthy discussions with the District Coordinating community presidents, members, Provincial and zonal education directors.

Every resource centre is equipped with computers, tabs, internet facilities and equipment relating to conducting online education.

Equal access to education should be provided to economically disadvantaged children, especially in the remote villages, who have problems with mobile phone signals and telephone facilities.

As a responsible government, this should be considered as our primary responsibility. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
