June 1 (Daily Mirror) - The Eravur Police have arrested a 14-year-old schoolboy for allegedly strangling his 11-year-old sister to death and hiding her body inside a water tank in the bathroom following an argument.
The victim has been identified as Sathnathan Saththisa, a resident of Eravur.
According to police investigations, the children's mother is currently employed abroad, and on the day of the incident, their father had also left the house for work. Left alone at home, a violent dispute erupted between the siblings over a mobile phone when the brother demanded the device from his younger sister to watch TikTok videos.
When the sister refused to hand over the phone, the brother allegedly assaulted her and strangled her. Preliminary investigations revealed that after she lost consciousness or passed away, the suspect dragged her body into the bathroom, placed it inside a water tank, and then went to a neighbor's house, pretending as if nothing had happened.
Upon returning home from work, the father searched for his children and discovered his daughter submerged in the water tank. Although he rushed her to the hospital immediately, she was pronounced dead.
Following an interrogation by the Eravur Police, the suspect confessed to killing his younger sister.
The deceased's body has been placed at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem to determine whether the exact cause of death was strangulation or drowning.
The arrested suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Magistrate's Court.
