Colombo, June 4 (Daily Mirror) - Three people, including a schoolboy, were killed after a tree collapsed onto a moving three-wheeler in the Mapakanda area of Nawalapitiya early this morning (04).
Police said the accident occurred at around 6:45 a.m. while the three-wheeler was travelling from Mapakanda towards Nawalapitiya town. The victims were identified as the schoolboy, his mother, and another woman who was travelling with them. The driver escaped unharmed.
Following the incident, police officers and local residents worked together to remove the fallen tree and rescue those trapped beneath the wreckage. The bodies were later recovered and transferred to Nawalapitiya District General Hospital.
Residents claimed that the eucalyptus tree had been in a deteriorated condition for a considerable period and alleged that repeated requests had been made to the relevant authorities to remove it. They expressed frustration that no preventive action had been taken despite warnings about the potential danger.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
