Colombo, December 11 (Daily Mirror) - All major rivers across the country are flowing at normal levels with no risk of minor or major flooding, according to the latest hydrology update issued at 6.30 a.m. today (11).
The Hydrology and Disaster Management Division reports that key river basins—including the Kelani, Kalu, Mahaweli, Gin, Nilwala and Walawe—remain well below their respective flood alert thresholds. Water level readings taken between 5.00 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. confirmed stable conditions, with only slight millimetre-level increases recorded at a few locations.
The Kelani Ganga at Nagalagam Street, Hanwella, Glencourse and Kithulgala remained within normal limits, while the Kalu Ganga at Putupaula, Ellagawa and Ratnapura showed minor rises but stayed well below warning levels. Similar patterns were observed in the Gin, Nilwala and Mahaweli rivers.
Rainfall over the past 21 hours was low in most areas, with the highest recorded at Maguru Ganga (29.4 mm) and Baddegama on the Gin Ganga (14.7 mm).
The report was prepared by Hydrology Assistants and certified by Eng. L. S. Sooriyabandara, Director of Hydrology and Disaster Management.
Officials said continuous monitoring will continue, but current river basin conditions pose no immediate flood concerns.
