EC calls for applications from political parties for 2026 recognition

Colombo, Jan. 29 (Daily Mirror) - The Election Commission has called for applications from political parties eligible for official recognition in 2026.

According to the Commission, applications will be accepted from January 28 to February 28, 2026, and must be submitted with the required documents signed by the party secretary.

Application forms can be obtained from the Election Commission’s official website, district election offices or the Office of the Election Secretary.

The Commission said recognised parties will be required to specify their allocated symbol in accordance with relevant Gazette notifications.

Supporting documents must include the party constitution, a list of office bearers, details of female office bearers over the past four years, audited financial statements, the party’s current policy statement and proof of continuous operation during the last four years.

Completed applications should be submitted by post or hand-delivered to the Election Commission by 3.00 p.m. on February 28, 2026, clearly marked “Application for Recognition of Political Party – 2026”.
