“Empowering the mind and eyes,” is the motto behind Sanjeev Jayaratnam’s concept of speed-reading. 
 

A charismatic maestro who promises to improve his students’ reading to a “lightning” speed, Sanjeev has been conducting speed-reading courses through his academy for six years. He is the CEO and Course Facilitator at Revelations Professional Education Academy which conducts sessions in speed-reading for adults as well as children. Apart from conducting public programmes, Sanjeev also carries out classes for corporate organisations, helping the employers improve their reading skills. 
 

As a youth Sajneev learnt the skill of speed-reading on his own, through a set of tapes and books. However, he is now passionate about sharing his knowledge with others to improve their proficiency in reading and comprehension. 
 

According to Sanjeev, the notion of speed-reading is no magic formula. It is grounded in the idea of learning to read, with more focus and concentration. He added that students as well as adults could reap the benefits of this technique. 

“Speed-reading is a life skill. Obviously, being able to read faster means you save more time, and time is a valuable resource,” he claimed. 
 

“Our mind is much more efficient than we may know. When we read slowly, the mind gets bored and starts wandering. Then we lose our concentration and as a result we lose our retention power and memory. With speed reading, the memory and retention improve greatly because you are more focused on the material that you are reading,” he added.

Sanjeev went on to explain the structure of the classes.

“From then onwards, with each reading exercise we measure your speed as well as your comprehension and plot your progress.” 
 

Sanjeev guarantees a 100 percent – if not more – improvement in reading speed and comprehension by the end of his three-session course.  
 

One of the techniques that Sanjeev uses is ‘unlearning’ and removing mental barriers through building self-belief. This makes Sanjeev’s course different from any other. 






 

“One of the myths that are instilled in us as children is that if you read fast, it means that you are not concentrating and you are not reading the text wholly. So we are discouraged to read fast. However, this is not true. We need to start believing in our own competencies. We must believe that we are capable of reading faster and retaining the material. At this point we can cross the mental barrier. That is the first step to improving your reading speed and skills,” he asserted. 
 

Through these classes, Sanjeev aims not only to improve his students’ reading and comprehension skills but also to build their self-esteem and confidence by encouraging them to unleash their true potential.  The other aspects of his classes include motivation to venture out of one’s comfort zone as well as teaching methods for stress-relief.
