Worrying observations during Kataragama Pada Yatra
Pada Yatra is an annual pilgrimage from Nagadipa to Kataragama which is an important event mainly for Hindu devotees. Pilgrims travel via the Yala National Park prior to reaching their destination. A video that went viral recently shows pilgrims trying to avoid an elephant in close proximity. It wasn’t clear whether it was the pilgrims that had blocked the elephant’s path or vice versa. However, the point is that such pilgrimages should be done with much caution. At a time when the human-wildlife conflict has escalated, people should be mindful about their journey through habitats frequented by wild animals such as leopards and elephants.
