Wipe Out Bribery, Build Public Trust: Practical Steps Toward a Corruption-Free Government

In addition to the measures proposed in my article “Establish In-House CIABOC Units to Clean the Augean Stables of Public Institutions” (Daily Mirror, May 29, 2025), here are further practical and symbolic steps that can reinforce a culture of integrity and accountability in government departments:
1. Daily Anti-Bribery Oath
Introduce a daily staff ritual where, immediately after the National Anthem, all employees take a solemn oath to serve the public without seeking or accepting bribes. This reinforces ethical awareness and accountability at the start of each workday.
2. Computer Screensavers with Anti-Corruption Messages
Equip government office computers with screen savers that flash stark reminders of the legal and moral consequences of bribery. These visual cues serve as constant reinforcements against unethical behaviour.
3. Impactful Posters on Bribery and Integrity
Place well-designed posters in common areas, carrying powerful messages to deter corrupt practices. Examples include:
“Why take bribes when you are paid a salary?”
“Serve with empathy, not expectation”.
“Bribe-takers earn the curse of those they exploit”.
“Both giver and taker of bribes are complicit—and culpable”.
“Reject santhosam—choose integrity”.
4. LED Displays with Dynamic Anti-Corruption Messaging
Install LED screens in lobbies and public areas to display rotating messages about the dangers and consequences of bribery. These can include statistics, real-life cases, and quotes to inspire a zero-tolerance mindset.
Such proactive steps—simple, cost-effective, yet deeply symbolic—can go a long way in transforming the work culture in public institutions and strengthening citizens’ trust in the system.
Let’s replace silent complicity with bold integrity. Bribery ends when we stop enabling it.
