Why not go digital with Pandals?

As Vesak approaches, the familiar sight of pandals being put up in  Colombo, including Kosgashandiya, Thotalanga, Maradana, Peliyagoda, Orugodawaththa, Dematagoda and other prominent places brings a sense of festive anticipation. Traditionally, these intricate displays are erected using hollow metal pipes and scaffolding requiring weeks of preparation. Roads are partially or fully closed well in advance, leading to traffic congestion and daily inconvenience for motorists.

In this digital age, isn’t it time we explored more innovative ways to celebrate? Digital pandals could offer a sustainable, cost-effective, and safer alternative. Using LED screens, the stories of Lord Buddha could be brought to life in vivid, interactive ways—without the need for heavy structures or road closures.

Going digital could also allow for creative storytelling, with dynamic visuals accessible to more people across different locations, including online platforms. Moreover, such an approach would reduce the environmental footprint associated with traditional pandal construction.

As we honour tradition, let’s also embrace the possibilities of the future. A digital Vesak could blend heritage with innovation in truly meaningful ways.
