Why ancient tanks need to be restored

Restoring Ancient Tanks is key for the advancement of agriculture. The deplorable state of ancient tanks in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa areas is a pressing concern that warrants immediate attention from the government.
These tanks, which have been the lifeblood of agriculture in these regions for centuries, are in dire need of restoration and repair. These ancient tanks are not only a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of our ancestors,  but also play a vital role in supporting the livelihoods of local farmers.
By restoring these tanks, the government can help to:
  • Improve Water Management - Restored tanks can help regulate water supply, reducing the risk of floods and droughts,  ensure a steady supply of water for agriculture and will thereby boost agricultural productivity.
  • Restored tanks can help farmers to increase crop yields, improve agricultural productivity, and enhance food security.
  • Restoration of ancient tanks can also have a positive impact on local communities, providing more employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth by exporting surplus produce.
Urgent action is required by the government to take immediate action to restore these ancient tanks.
Some issues highlighted by protesting farmers include blocked sluice gates. Hence the clearing of blocked sluice gates is essential to ensure proper water flow and water management. Presence of alarming salvinia growth and the accumulation of mud must be dealt with.
Therefore the government should consider restoring ancient tanks in order to fulfill its promises made to farmers and to ensure sustainability with regards to agriculture.
