Big match fever is on and many schoolboys from leading schools are parading the streets to support their teams. With all this excitement, some students resort to mischievous behaviour, as means of having some ‘fun’. Yet this time, this mischief has somewhat gone out of control that some students even had to be taken in to custody.
Making matters even worse, a few walls of houses and firms in Horton Place have been vandalised with initials of Ananda College. The accused are not yet known but the spoke to a few individuals with
regard to this matter to highlight on matters such as discipline and keeping the environment clean.
Raising their concerns over this issue, several residents suggested that the schoolboys should repaint the walls.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Anjali Zoysa, Directress - House of Montessori Children, whose wall too was vandalised said that values inculcated in a leading school in Colombo amounts to sheer vandalism! “A pristine white wall of a pre school at Horton Place was ruined by scarlet graffiti during Big Match heat parade. The head of the school should make the culprits pay for the damage caused by their bad behaviour.”
Another concerned resident, who wished to remain anonymous said that either the principal must
apologize or should compensate because the resident has to repaint the walls again. “This is not what cricket is all about. It is supposed to be ‘the gentleman’s game’, but these students are not acting like gentlemen. The CMC should take some action against this. Is this we call education? There need to be strict disciplinary rules in schools. Ananda College is a well reputed school in the country and these students are a shame to this school.”
The responsible teams should repaint the walls - Principal of Ananda College
In his comments to the Daily Mirror, Kithsiri Liyanagamage, Principal of Ananda College said, “I have informed the relevant teachers in-charge to ask the responsible teams to go to these institutions/residences and repaint the walls.”
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Sub-Inspector Shankar attached to the Minor Inquiries Division of Sri Lanka Police said that they have received a complaint. “We do not know what the complainant wants. There has to be an inquiry carried out as to who is actually behind this incident. Thereafter we will take necessary action.”
The Daily Mirror also contacted Colombo Municipal Council Commissioner V. K. Anura who in response said that he had nothing to do with regard to this incident.
