Time for Action, Not Rhetoric

The government must now move beyond rhetoric and begin practising what it preaches. The results of the recent local government elections should serve as a wake-up call—a clear message from the people that they expect delivery, not excuses.

The past seven months have been spent blaming the previous administration for 76 years of misrule. Ironically, this has now extended to 76 and a half years of blame. Citizens are increasingly asking: Where is the equality before the law that was so strongly promised?

So far, we have seen no accountability for the Prime Minister’s breach of election laws when she urged supporters to campaign during a prohibited period. Additionally, there has been a worrying delay in the investigation of a teacher—allegedly a government sympathiser—accused of molesting a schoolgirl. Justice must not only be done, but it must be seen to be done.

The time for the blame game is over. The government must now show the people that it means business, respects the rule of law, and governs with integrity. The public is watching—and waiting. Upali Weerasinghe
