Think Pink — A Simple, Cost-Effective Way to Show You Care

Every year, October is observed globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Sri Lanka too,  has joined this noble cause. A special meeting of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus was recently held in Parliament, highlighting the alarming reality — breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women worldwide, with about 15 new cases and 3 deaths reported daily in Sri Lanka.

To raise awareness, students of Musaeus College are donning pink ties every Wednesday, while Members of Parliament and staff will wear pink on a designated day next week.

However, to make this campaign more inclusive, affordable, and impactful, I suggest that everyone — students, employees, and citizens alike — wear a simple pink headband, arm band, or wristband.

This is a cost-effective and practical alternative to pink clothing or ties, yet carries the same powerful message of solidarity.

If implemented across girls’ schools, workplaces, and public institutions, and with men participating too, this small act could create a visible wave of unity and compassion in the fight against breast cancer.
