The government should maintain sensitivity in high-profile cases

The recent developments regarding the Wasim Thajudeen murder case involving a voice cut given by the son of Aruna Vidanagamage, alias ‘Kajja’, set a dangerous precedent about the sensitivity of the case. Contradictory statements given by his wife and later by his son indicate the nature with which certain elements are trying to manipulate investigations. Over the past 12 years, Thajudeen’s family members have been left in the dark with only dead ends and loopholes. But this government’s promise of meting out justice to high-profile crimes is a tremendous responsibility that they have vested upon their shoulders. On the other hand, the police should also be issued directives not to provide sensitive information to the media until the case has been investigated and perpetrators have been taken to justice. Therefore, it is the duty of the state to advise law enforcement authorities to maintain the sensitivity of these cases and not do a media show and politicise such incidents. This trend of politicising such matters needs to stop immediately.
