Relics exposition and people’s expectations

The crowds that have flocked to Kandy to witness the sacred relics exposition speaks volumes about their devotion to Buddhism. Even though many blamed that the government was following pro-nationalist agendas, people are indeed happy about this decision made by the government. Devotees were seen napping on the pavements as they certainly cannot afford to book rooms in luxury hotels. Without paying too much attention to comforts, people are eagerly awaiting their turn to witness the sacred relics. One lady speaking on television said that viewing relics is similar to viewing Gautama Buddha in real life and that she was too excited for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Legend has it that when the sacred tooth relic was first taken out for public viewing Kandy was inundated by a heavy flood. A photo of this unusual phenomenon is mounted on the walls of the iconic Queen’s Hotel, Kandy. But despite the myths and facts, people have flocked to Kandy to witness an ultimate opportunity in their lifetime as a Buddhist. On a usual day it is nearly impossible to take a closer look at the sacred relic unless you are accompanied by a custodian of the Maligawa. Therefore a majority of Buddhists don’t want to miss this opportunity. The government estimates the arrival of at least two million devotees during this 10-day exhibition.
