Rainwater harvesting: A timely investment for Sri Lanka

In the concluding part of your editorial on June 13, 2026, you rightly pointed out that the US-Israeli conflict involving Iran and any closure of the Strait of Hormuz could leave Sri Lanka highly vulnerable. You also stressed the need for the government to invest more in renewable energy to reduce our dependence on external powers and global oil shocks.

Along with renewable energy, I wish to suggest another urgent and practical investment: large-scale rainwater harvesting.
With the possible adverse effects of El Niño approaching, both the government and the corporate sector should seriously consider investing in rainwater harvesting systems across the country. Such a move would not only help reduce flooding and the suffering caused to people and animals, but also bring several long-term benefits:
1. Promote water and energy conservation.
2. Provide water for household uses such as washing clothes, cleaning vehicles, and watering plants.
3. Reduce household water bills.
4. Help reduce soil erosion and pollution of rivers and other water bodies.
5. It  is an investment that benefits both the economy and the environment.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has already shown concern about mitigating the effects of El Niño by recently meeting with the Meteorology Department and other relevant agencies. I hope the government will now take the next step and launch a national programme to promote and invest in rainwater harvesting on a large scale.
