Out of Sync with Our Anthem? Let’s Make Every Voice Count!

It is customary — and indeed meaningful — to begin any national event or public function by playing or singing the National Anthem, which pays homage to the beauty and spirit of Sri Lanka. Yet, it is disheartening to witness how few actually join in when the video is played.

Some remain silent out of indifference, while others may genuinely not know the words — especially if they are unfamiliar with Sinhala. To encourage wider participation, I propose that the video include transliterations of the Sinhala lyrics in both English and Tamil. This would enable more people  to follow and sing along with confidence.

Moreover, displaying an English and Tamil translation — or at least a synopsis — would help people understand the anthem’s deep meaning, rather than just parroting the words.

Why shouldn’t we, as proud Sri Lankans, unite in voice to honour our homeland through this symbolic ritual?

Let me end with the powerful opening line of our anthem: “Namo Namo Matha” — Mother Lanka, we salute thee.

Over to the powers that be to consider implementing the above proposal.
