INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY

It is clearly visible that May Day is a European Festival of ancient origins, marking the beginning of summer, usually celebrated on the 1st of May, around halfway between spring and summer. Festivities may also be held the night before, known as May Eve

On the other hand May 1, 1889 was chosen as the date for International Workers’ Day by the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago and the Struggle for an eight hour working Day as a result, International workers Day Called ‘May day’ but the two are otherwise unrelated Labour day also called May Day in Sri Lanka is observed every first of May same year, however it may conflict with the Week-Long Vesak Festival and be delayed until later in the month so the two holidays won’t over lap. The main event for Labour Day In Sri Lankan are colourful parades, gigantic Labour union rallies, and Political Speeches and the like. It is much more focused on actual labour related Issues than just on fun and games like in other countries However families do still get a day off to Spend together and may get out and enjoy Festive events. It is our duty to have a clear Knowledge about the history of International Workers’ Day. For working people to have a rest from their usual labour it is an opportunity to campaign for workers’ rights, Show solidarity with other working people and to celebrate the achievement of workers all over the world.
